Let's begin with a little background info. While Las Vegas is known as the Entertainment Capital of the World, the city first started out as a pioneer stopover and quickly became a railroad town in the 1900’s. With the completion of the Hoover Dam in 1935, the city got its first major tourist attraction.
The legalization of gambling opened a whole new industry as America's organized crime groups realized the opportunity to make money, (and took advantage of it in style). Many of the original Vegas hotels were managed and funded by infamous mob personas such as Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel and Meyer Lansky. In the late 1960’s, billionaire Howard Hughes took over the city by purchasing numerous hotels, opening the doors for other legitimate investors to follow suit. Today, Vegas’s only true rival in gambling revenues is the Chinese city of Macau.
