Although the Vegas Lion King is adapted from a children’s movie, it is a show designed to entertain and amaze the whole family, young and old. With amazing, costumes, awe-inspiring acrobatics and mind-blowing puppetry, it has been drawing huge crowds since it opened, and is one of the most popular Las Vegas shows.
The Lion King Vegas is a beautiful spectacle with award-winning choreography and some very impressive special effects. The creative use of African-style masks allows the actors to make use of their human features to convey emotion, while still creating clear animal characters. Even some of the puppeteers have their faces visible, which helps create a blended storytelling experience.
Vegas The Lion King tells the story of Simba, a young lion whose father is killed by his evil uncle (not entirely unlike Shakespeare’s Hamlet). Simba then escapes into the wilderness and experiences a touching coming of age journey, ending in his ultimate return to claim back his thrown and win the heart of his beautiful childhood friend. Along the way he meets a cast of varied characters who teach him about life, love, bravery and following one’s path in life. There is also plenty of time for song and dance, with the much-loved soundtrack, including Elton John’s and Tim Rice’s Oscar winning “Can You Feel the Love Tonight”.
Lion King Vegas has an obvious appeal to those who have seen the movie, but even those unfamiliar with the plot are bound to enjoy this spectacular performance. Showing nightly at the Vegas Mandalay Bay Theatre (somewhat in keeping with the hotel’s jungle and tropical paradise theme) it’s a great evening out for the whole family, full of charming surprises that make for an unforgettable night.
